eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)

The most clinically useful summary of kidney function.

What it is

eGFR is calculated from creatinine, age, and sex using the CKD-EPI or MDRD formula. It estimates the volume of blood the kidneys can filter per minute per unit of body surface area.

Why it matters

eGFR is used directly to grade kidney disease (CKD stages 1–5) and to determine safe doses of many drugs including chemotherapy agents. An eGFR below 60 triggers dose adjustments; below 30 may contraindicate certain drugs. Tracking eGFR through treatment is mandatory.

How to test

Calculated from creatinine. Automatically reported on most renal function panels.
