Folic Acid (Folate)

Essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell production.

What it is

Folate (vitamin B9) is required for DNA replication and repair, amino acid metabolism, and the production of red blood cells. It works closely with vitamin B12.

Why it matters

Some chemotherapy drugs (particularly methotrexate) act by blocking folate metabolism. Folate deficiency causes anaemia and can worsen treatment-related fatigue. Monitoring ensures your levels stay in range without interfering with treatment.

How to test

Blood test. Red blood cell folate (RBC folate) is a better long-term indicator than serum folate.
