HDL Cholesterol
The protective lipoprotein β higher is generally better.
What it is
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) transports cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver for excretion. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is often called "good cholesterol."
Why it matters
Low HDL is an independent cardiovascular risk factor. In cancer, low HDL correlates with worse outcomes in several studies β possibly because HDL has direct anti-tumour immune functions. Raising HDL through exercise, omega-3s, and smoking cessation is one of the more impactful lifestyle interventions.
