LDL/HDL Ratio

A more predictive cardiovascular risk indicator than LDL alone.

What it is

The LDL/HDL ratio divides total LDL by HDL. It captures both the "bad" and "good" cholesterol in a single number, making it a stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk than either value in isolation.

Why it matters

Someone with low LDL but also very low HDL may have similar cardiovascular risk to someone with higher LDL but good HDL. The ratio captures this balance. Targeting ratio rather than just LDL better reflects the lipid environment.

How to test

Calculated from lipid panel (LDL ÷ HDL).
