Lipase

More pancreas-specific than amylase β€” the preferred pancreatitis marker.

What it is

Lipase is produced almost exclusively by the pancreas to digest dietary fats. It remains elevated longer than amylase during pancreatitis (up to 14 days vs 5 days) and is more specific to pancreatic pathology.

Why it matters

When pancreatitis is suspected β€” whether from treatment toxicity, gallstones, or other causes β€” lipase is the preferred diagnostic marker. Levels more than 3Γ— the upper limit of normal with abdominal pain are strongly diagnostic of pancreatitis.
