MCH (Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin)

Average haemoglobin content per red blood cell.

What it is

MCH is the average amount of haemoglobin per red blood cell. It largely parallels MCV — low MCH occurs with iron deficiency and microcytic anaemia; high MCH with macrocytic states.

Why it matters

MCH provides confirmatory information alongside MCV when characterising the type of anaemia. Clinically, it rarely changes interpretation but adds precision.
