VLDL Cholesterol
The triglyceride-carrying lipoprotein β a metabolic health signal.
What it is
VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) is produced by the liver and carries triglycerides to tissues. It is the precursor to LDL. Elevated VLDL reflects excess carbohydrate and calorie intake driving excess triglyceride production.
Why it matters
High VLDL contributes to atherogenic dyslipidaemia β small, dense LDL particles that are more damaging to arteries. It responds well to dietary carbohydrate reduction, exercise, and omega-3 supplementation.
How to test
Calculated from lipid panel: VLDL β Triglycerides Γ· 5 (in mg/dL). Included in extended panels.
This information is for educational purposes only. Always discuss testing and interpretation of results with your care team.
Optimal range
Below 0.77 mmol/L (30 mg/dL).
How often
Each lipid panel (every 6β12 months).
