Waist Circumference
A better metabolic risk indicator than BMI alone.
What it is
Waist circumference measures abdominal girth at the navel level. It is a proxy for visceral fat — the metabolically active fat that accumulates around organs.
Why it matters
Visceral fat is pro-inflammatory. It secretes cytokines and hormones that worsen insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. Reducing waist circumference (even without significant scale movement) is a meaningful health intervention.
How to test
Flexible measuring tape at navel level. Exhale normally before measuring. Same time of day for consistency.
This information is for educational purposes only. Always discuss testing and interpretation of results with your care team.
Optimal range
Below 94cm for men, below 80cm for women. Above these thresholds: increased metabolic risk.
How often
Monthly.
