Astragalus

One of the most studied adaptogenic herbs in oncology settings.

What it is

Astragalus membranaceus root is one of the most important herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been studied more rigorously than almost any other herbal supplement in oncology contexts. Its active polysaccharides (astragalans) and saponins are potent immune modulators.

Why it matters

Astragalus increases NK cell activity, stimulates T-cell and B-cell function, and has shown ability to protect bone marrow function during chemotherapy β€” directly addressing one of the most common reasons for treatment delay. It is a central component of Chinese oncology adjunct protocols (Fuzheng therapy).

The evidence

A Cochrane-adjacent systematic review and multiple meta-analyses found astragalus-based Chinese herbal medicine combined with chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival, tumour response, quality of life, and reduced side effects across multiple cancer types. The evidence base is unusually strong for a botanical supplement.

Dosing

500–1500mg standardised root extract daily (standardised to polysaccharide content), or 10–30g decocted root. Can be taken as a daily adaptogen or increased during treatment cycles.

Cautions

Potential interaction with immunosuppressants β€” check with your doctor if on immunosuppressive therapy. Fresh root preparations may contain compounds not present in extracts. Avoid very high doses immediately before surgery.

Astragalus Root Extract 500mg

Look for standardised extract with astragaloside IV or polysaccharide content specified. Traditional preparations (decoctions) are effective but require more preparation. Concentrated extracts (10:1 or 20:1) are convenient.
