EGCG (Green Tea / Matcha)

The most researched green tea catechin β€” potent anti-cancer and antioxidant effects.

What it is

EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is the primary bioactive catechin in green tea and matcha. Concentrated EGCG supplements provide much higher doses than tea alone. Matcha contains significantly more EGCG than standard green tea due to the whole-leaf preparation.

Why it matters

EGCG inhibits cancer cell growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis through multiple mechanisms: it inhibits EGFR signalling, activates AMPK, and induces apoptosis in numerous cancer cell lines. It has shown synergistic effects with several chemotherapy agents and broad anti-inflammatory activity.

The evidence

Extensive pre-clinical evidence. Clinical trials show EGCG reduces PSA progression in prostate cancer. Japanese research on matcha consumption and cancer risk is extensive. The EGCG concentration in matcha (approximately 60mg per gram of powder) makes it one of the most practical whole-food sources.

Dosing

300–600mg EGCG daily. This is equivalent to 5–10g high-quality matcha. Take with food to reduce GI irritation. Avoid consuming within 1–2 hours of iron supplements or medications β€” EGCG reduces iron absorption and may affect drug metabolism.

Cautions

High doses on empty stomach can cause nausea. Very high doses (>1g/day) have been associated with liver stress in rare cases β€” stay within recommended range. Timing around chemotherapy: some oncologists advise avoiding strong antioxidants near infusion β€” check your protocol.
