Molecular Hydrogen (H₂)

A selective antioxidant that neutralises only the most harmful free radicals — without interfering with treatment.

What it is

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the smallest molecule in the universe. It diffuses rapidly through biological membranes and selectively neutralises hydroxyl radicals (·OH) — the most damaging reactive oxygen species — without quenching the beneficial ROS needed for immune signalling and chemotherapy's mechanism of action.

Why it matters

Unlike broad antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E) which can interfere with chemotherapy by scavenging all ROS including those that kill cancer cells, H₂ selectively targets only the most harmful free radical species. This makes it uniquely useful during cancer treatment — potentially protecting healthy tissue from oxidative damage while leaving treatment efficacy intact.

The evidence

Over 1,500 peer-reviewed studies. Japanese research is most advanced — hydrogen inhalation is being evaluated in hospital settings. Human trials in chemotherapy patients show reduced fatigue, nausea, and inflammatory markers. A randomised trial in liver cancer patients receiving radiation showed H₂ group maintained better quality of life and appetite vs control.

Dosing

Hydrogen-rich water (1–2 ppm H₂): 500ml–1L daily, ideally 45 minutes before meals on an empty stomach. Hydrogen inhalation: 30–60 minutes daily at 2–4% H₂ (specialised devices). Hydrogen tablets: 1–3 tablets dissolved in 300ml water immediately before drinking. Dissolved H₂ is extremely unstable — drink immediately.

Cautions

H₂ dissolves poorly and dissipates rapidly — hydrogen water must be consumed immediately after preparation or from sealed pressurised bottles. The market has many ineffective products — verify H₂ concentration with H₂Blue test drops. Hydrogen gas inhalation devices require proper safety specifications (keep below explosive concentration of 4%).
