MPV (Mean Platelet Volume)

Average platelet size — larger platelets are more active.

What it is

MPV is the average size of platelets. Larger platelets are younger, more metabolically active, and better at clotting. Rising MPV after chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia signals bone marrow recovery.

Why it matters

A rising MPV alongside recovering PLT count is a reassuring sign of bone marrow regeneration. Conversely, low MPV with low PLT may indicate suppressed marrow rather than consumption. It adds nuance to interpreting platelet counts.
