Total Protein
A broad measure of nutritional status and liver protein synthesis.
What it is
Total protein measures all proteins in the blood, primarily albumin and globulins. It reflects both nutritional status and the liver's ability to synthesise proteins. Interpretation requires context from the albumin fraction.
Why it matters
Low total protein (hypoproteinaemia) during cancer treatment signals poor nutritional intake, impaired liver function, or excessive protein loss. Protein status directly affects treatment tolerability, recovery speed, and immune function.
How to test
Standard metabolic panel. No fasting required.
This information is for educational purposes only. Always discuss testing and interpretation of results with your care team.
Optimal range
65–85 g/L.
How often
Every 3–6 months, or with each oncology panel.
