Urea (BUN)

A kidney and protein metabolism marker β€” rises with dehydration or high protein intake.

What it is

Urea is the end product of protein breakdown, produced in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) rises when the kidneys are not filtering efficiently, or when protein catabolism is elevated.

Why it matters

Monitoring urea alongside creatinine gives a full picture of kidney function. Elevated urea with normal creatinine often suggests dehydration or high protein intake. Both elevated together suggests reduced kidney filtration β€” relevant during nephrotoxic chemotherapy.
