AHCC

A specialised mushroom extract with strong clinical evidence for NK cell and immune activation in oncology.

What it is

AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a proprietary extract of hybridised shiitake mushroom mycelia, standardised to alpha-glucan content. It is manufactured by Amino Up Chemical in Japan and has been evaluated in over 30 human clinical trials, more than almost any other natural immune supplement.

Why it matters

AHCC consistently increases NK cell activity and count, boosts T-cell and dendritic cell function, and has shown ability to enhance chemotherapy efficacy while reducing side effects. It is used as a standard oncology adjunct in Japanese hospitals and has generated research interest at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The evidence

Studies from MD Anderson, Yale, and multiple Japanese institutions. A landmark study showed AHCC eliminated HPV infection in 50% of treated women vs 0% placebo over 6 months. Multiple trials show improved quality of life, NK cell activity, and immune function during and after cancer treatment. Critical: must be taken on an empty stomach for full efficacy.

Dosing

3g/day on an empty stomach — 30–60 minutes before meals. Food significantly reduces AHCC absorption. This is one of the most critical and commonly missed instructions for this supplement. Higher doses (6g) used in some oncology protocols.

Cautions

Must be taken fasting for full effect — food dramatically reduces bioavailability. Expensive — but uniquely specific to oncology immune support with few natural equivalents at equivalent evidence levels. Consult oncologist before use during checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy.
